When buyers ask for a “waterproof dry bag,” they often mean one product. Factories hear two different jobs: PVC and TPU. Both can keep gear dry. They are not interchangeable if you care about margin, brand positioning, and return rates.
PVC dry bags are common in camping, kayaking starter kits, and promotional outdoor lines. Buyers like them because the cost is easier to control, colors come out bold, and the material holds up well for general water sports.
They are a strong choice when:
(1)Your retail price needs to stay competitive.
(2)You need larger volumes for wholesale programs.
(3)The bag is mainly for splash protection, river trips, or boat storage.
The trade-off is feel and temperature. Some PVC constructions feel stiffer, especially in colder weather. That does not mean the bag is bad. It means you should match the product story to the material.
TPU is often selected for brands that want a softer surface, nicer fold, and a more refined look in product photos. For some markets, TPU also supports a better “performance gear” message.
Choose TPU when:
(1)You sell into higher retail price bands.
(2)Your customers care about packability and hand feel.
(3)You need a bag that still feels workable in colder conditions.
The trade-off is usually unit cost. If your channel is price-driven wholesale, jumping straight to TPU can squeeze margin unless the brand story is clear.
A cheap weld on TPU can fail faster than a well-made PVC bag. Material is only one part of waterproof performance. Welding quality, roll-top design, buckle strength, and strap attachment matter just as much.
Ask your manufacturer for:
(1)Fabric thickness and coating details
(2)Welding method
(3)Suggested capacity range for your use case
(4)Sample lead time for both PVC and TPU versions
If this is your first private-label dry bag project, start with one hero SKU. Many buyers overbuild the assortment: five sizes, three colors, two materials, custom lining, and special hardware all at once. That slows sampling and makes QC harder.
A cleaner launch plan looks like this:
(1) Pick one main use case (kayak day pack, beach dry bag, motorcycle trip bag).
(2)Choose PVC or TPU based on price band.
(3)Lock 2–3 sizes and 2–3 colors.
(4) Approve one sample thoroughly.
(5)Scale after the first reorder proves sell-through.
Carsikie Bag manufactures PVC and TPU waterproof dry bags, plus waterproof backpacks and duffles for outdoor brands and wholesalers. If you are unsure which material fits your market, send your target retail price, destination country, and expected monthly volume. That is enough for a practical recommendation.
