PVC or TPU? Most Buyers Decide This Backwards
A lot of first emails say “TPU, better quality.” Sometimes that matches the shop they are buying for. More often they handled a softer bag at a show and decided the coating was the whole product.
PVC tarpaulin is still what most of the volume is made from. It takes a strong color, the price holds up on a wholesale program, and it does not mind being scraped along a dock. A 500D PVC duffel or a roll-top camping bag can feel boardy when the weather is cold. If your customer is stuffing the bag into a kayak hatch in a northern European spring, they will notice the stiffness. If the bag is a hotel welcome gift, or a race kit that sits in a cupboard until the weekend, they usually will not.
TPU is for when the bag itself is the product
TPU is where we point people when the dry bag is what they are selling, not a giveaway tucked into a larger kit. It folds with less fight, the surface looks cleaner in photos, and it stays workable when the temperature drops. Brands that need a performance story, or a backpack with a laminated face, usually land here. It costs more. If the retail price cannot move, you have just paid for a hand feel your customer may not pay you back for.
We run both, and the site is a fair picture of how the split actually goes. JA051 is a lightweight PVC tarpaulin roll-top for camping. JA052 is a TPU roll-top backpack with a large pocket on the outside, built for kayaking, because paddlers want something they can reach without opening the dry throat. JA053, the 5L orange ocean bag, is listed as 600D PVC or TPU. The cloth weight and the coating are picked for the order. They are not a ranking.
A soft bag shows a bad weld faster
This is the part that gets skipped when the conversation stays on “premium.” A thin weld will embarrass a TPU bag sooner than it embarrasses a decent PVC one. Soft material shows every thin spot, and it creases harder in the carton. Material is not waterproof performance. The weld, the length of the skirt, and whether the buckle can close a full bag are the rest of it.
So the question we send back is dull on purpose. Where does the bag live, what does it have to sell for, and does anyone need to pack it flat in the cold? A marina shop and a distributor buying 5L bags with several logos are not the same job, even when both subject lines say waterproof dry bag.
Put a target unit price in the first email if you have one. It stops us sampling the wrong cloth.
